Returning people to the moon is more than launching a rocket. This is a logistical challenge involving three different spacecraft that must communicate with each other in space. Artemis 3 is a mission that changes everything, but it relies on choreography that has never been attempted before.
Two of the vehicles were military veterans. Orion flew twice on Artemis flights. It feels like a workout. The remaining two are still in development. they have not been proven. they are dangerous.
The program starts with Blue Origin. Their landing craft was the first to launch. It sits in orbit around the moon and waits. Then Orion takes off. It will be docked to the Blue Origin meter. The crew moved there. They spend their time in the country or prepare for the next step.
Then the twisting begins.
SpaceX’s Starship landed for the third time. Not expected to orbit with other planets. It arrived after the separation of the Orion and Blue Origin landers. Orion is different from Blue Origin. Fly towards the spaceship. The crew was redeployed. Now they are preparing for the last leg.
This is not a simple trip from point A to point B. This is a space message. Each boat has its own window. Every dock has to be perfect. If one of them fails, the whole mission stops.
Why complicate things? Why not use a lander? The answer lies in ability. Spaceships are huge. It carries more mass. More options are provided. Blue Origin is smaller. It’s nimble. The bus is Orion. It can take you there and back.
But getting them to work together was the real test. There is no backup plan in case the docking fails. There are no spare ships. that’s it.
The stakes are high. Time is running out. This technology is new. But the goal is clear. I’m going home. The three platforms do this in sync.
