Nearly every major Italian city is now on the highest “red” heat alert. The situation isn’t improving. It’s getting worse.

Health officials confirmed on Saturday that 19 cities from the Alpine north to the Mediterranean south have already crossed that threshold. Rome is at red alert. Milan. Venice. Naples. By Monday, that number will climb.

Only two locations will remain on the second-highest “amber” alert. Reggio Calabria, at the toe of the Italian boot, and Messina in Sicily, across the water from it. Everyone else is running hot.

The Italian Ministry of Health says 25 of the country’s 27 largest cities will be on red alert soon. That leaves just those two exceptions. Temperatures are hitting the mid-30s Celsius. Not high 30s. Just mid-30s. And even that causes damage.

The warnings are specific this time. Authorities are not just telling the elderly, the very young, or those with chronic illnesses to stay inside. They are warning healthy people too. Active people. You don’t need a pre-existing condition to overheat when the air is this thick.

The cause is a subtropical anticyclone pushing up from North Africa. It’s strengthening over the Mediterranean right now. It’s sinking heat directly onto the peninsula.

The advice from the ministry is blunt: avoid the sun between 11:00 and 18:00. Stay indoors. Drink fluids. Do not test your limits during those hours. The heat is a physical stressor, not just an inconvenience.

Meanwhile, the rest of Europe is burning. Several nations are battling wildfires fueled by these same heat conditions. Greece, France, Portugal, Spain. All of them.

In France, the situation remains volatile. On Friday evening, officials had to evacuate 2,500 people in the Var region. The blaze there had been contained for days. Then it reignited. Fires are unpredictable when the vegetation is this dry.

But there was one bright spot in the west. A massive fire in the Gironde region, southwest France, is finally under control. Around 200,000 residents who were evacuated earlier can go home. For now.

The contrast is stark. Italy is bracing for peak temperature. France is cleaning up the ashes of a different front in the same war. The heatwave doesn’t care about borders. It just spreads.

“The extreme heat is being caused by a subtle tropical anticyclone from North Africa.”

This isn’t an isolated event. It’s part of a pattern. The anticyclone strengthens, temperatures rise, fires ignite, and cities put out red alerts. The cycle repeats.

Some might ask why the alert levels are so aggressive. The answer is in the data. Health risks are no longer confined to vulnerable populations. When the body’s cooling mechanisms fail under sustained extreme heat, the outcome can be fatal regardless of fitness.

As Monday approaches, the map of red alerts will likely expand to cover almost all of Italy’s urban centers. The rest of the continent remains on fire. It’s a hot summer. Maybe hotter than usual. But the immediate danger is here, in the streets, in the homes, in the air we breathe.

And it’s only Saturday.
