Madagascar’s lemurs, iconic primates famed for their distinctive appearance, are facing an unexpected and escalating threat: wealthy urban consumers who pay high prices to eat them. A new study reveals that over 10,000 lemurs have been sold for consumption in 17 cities across the country in just the past four years, driven by a demand from those with disposable income.
A Growing Urban Market
While poaching for subsistence or local restaurants is known, the scale of this urban trade is startling. Researchers interviewed over 2,600 lemur hunters, sellers, and buyers to discover that lemur meat is considered a delicacy, valued for its perceived sweetness and supposed health benefits. Some consumers believe it promotes strength and vitality.
“It’s shocking,” says Liliana Cortés Ortiz, president of the International Primatological Society. “This previously unrecognized issue requires immediate attention from both governments and international conservation organizations.”
Why This Matters
The study, published in Conservation Letters, underscores that the problem isn’t simply about desperation. It’s a demand-driven market fueled by consumers who can afford to spend significantly on this illegal wildlife product. Russell Mittermeier, chief conservation officer of Re:wild, notes that the scale of this trade is “disgusting,” especially given the endangered status of many lemur species.
The Urgent Need for Action
Cortni Borgerson, the lead researcher, found that suppliers and buyers alike report increasing demand for lemur meat. This suggests the problem is not only present but worsening. The fact that this trade exists within a relatively affluent segment of Madagascar’s population highlights the need for targeted enforcement and awareness campaigns.
The continued demand for lemur meat in Madagascar poses a severe risk to the survival of these unique primates. Urgent conservation measures and stricter law enforcement are critical to curb this disturbing trend before it drives lemurs further toward extinction.
