Sark’s community has officially launched a citizen-led initiative, “Future Sark,” aimed at defining a long-term vision for the island’s development. The project was presented at Island Hall, with approximately 100 residents and Guernsey’s lieutenant governor in attendance.
A Citizen-Driven Vision
According to Steve Skelton of Question Factory – the firm facilitating the project – Future Sark is designed to prioritize local voices in shaping the island’s future. The core focus is to identify what matters most to Sark’s residents regarding their environment, economy, and community.
Key Concerns Emerge: Initial discussions reveal that islanders are largely focused on preserving Sark’s natural beauty while simultaneously ensuring economic stability and a close-knit community. The project seeks to translate these broad concerns into concrete plans.
How the Initiative Will Work
Future Sark will gather input through a series of stages:
– Direct Engagement: Organizers will host events starting in late April, followed by workshops in June.
– Digital Input: A survey will be rolled out this summer, allowing residents to share their views online. Video and message submissions are also encouraged.
– Report to Chief Pleas: By September, a detailed report will be presented to Sark’s government (Chief Pleas) for consideration as a formal, long-term strategy.
Connecting Vision to Action
Skelton stressed the importance of integrating Future Sark’s findings into the upcoming elections, expected around December. He urged residents to question candidates about how they would implement the plan if elected.
“This isn’t just about identifying what people want; it’s about ensuring that future leaders act on those priorities.”
The initiative represents a proactive step towards defining Sark’s path forward, ensuring that decisions are rooted in the community’s shared values. Ultimately, Future Sark aims to create a roadmap for a sustainable and thriving island, shaped by the very people who call it home.
